A 13th-century fortified castle on a rocky outcrop in the heart of the Sioule Gorge, it belonged to the Seigneurs de Chouvigny, the La Fayette family and the Duc de Morny. Restored in the 20th century, this family-run château can only be visited in summer (ISMH).

Description

The fortified castle of Chouvigny is one of the last examples of military architecture of the Middle Ages, in particular with the cavalry court and the archers in carp tail perfectly preserved in the watchtower. It is also the former home of illustrious figures such as Madame de La Fayette or the Duc de Morny. For almost 8 centuries, the castle of Chouvigny has watched like a sentinel over the Sioule Gorge, of which it is one of the tourist jewels. Visits give access to the oratory, to the stately home housing a collection of medieval weapons and armors, to the hall of honor, to the treasure tower and to the watchtower, as well as to the various terraces with panoramic views over the Sioule river.
